About
Our Mission
Good to the Bone provides high school runners, coaches, and parents with practical tools to prevent bone stress injuries through evidence-based education and real athlete experiences.
Why We Exist
High school distance runners today face training intensities comparable to collegiate programs but often lack the comprehensive support systems available at higher levels. Bone stress injuries have become increasingly common, yet many athletes, coaches, and parents don't recognize warning signs or know how to implement effective prevention strategies.
We bridge this gap by offering practical, research-backed solutions that work within existing high school program constraints.
Our Approach
Rather than requiring complete program overhauls, we focus on simple interventions that make a significant impact:
Post-workout nutrition strategies
Basic strength and plyometric protocols
Updated education on RED-S and energy deficiency
Guidelines for recognizing when athletes need training modifications
Evidence-based resources from leading experts
The Story Behind Good to the Bone
Good to the Bone was founded by Gavin May, a rising senior who experienced the devastating impact of bone stress injuries firsthand. After witnessing 5-10 teammates suffer similar injuries in just two years, Gavin realized this wasn't just bad luck - it was a systemic problem requiring practical solutions.
Working with board-certified experts Dr. Stephanie Mundt (BSI Specialist) and Stevie Smith (Sports Dietitian), Good to the Bone transforms personal experience into prevention resources that can help protect the next generation of runners.
Our Impact
Through masterclasses, educational resources, and athlete stories, we're building a community of informed coaches, athletes, and parents who prioritize long-term health alongside performance goals. Our resources are designed to be immediately implementable, requiring minimal additional time or resources while maximizing injury prevention benefits.
Looking Forward
Good to the Bone continues to develop new resources and educational opportunities, always guided by the principle that preventing injuries is better than treating them. We believe every young runner deserves the chance to pursue their goals safely and sustainably.
